Principal's Message

Island View Families:

On a recent Friday afternoon, I dropped by a kindergarten class when their 4th grade buddies were visiting. Older and younger students sat together in every nook and cranny of the room, reading books, working on math problems and letter formation, and genuinely enjoying one another’s company. Warm laughter and smiles filled the room. After almost two years of students being separated from one another, my heart filled with gratitude at the collaboration and goodwill that filled the space. We are ending the year in a very beautiful manner. 😊

Spring is a busy time. Here’s a look at some of our Island View happenings:

  • During the month of May, students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will take the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in math and English language arts. Elementary students in grade 5 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).  These important assessments help our district serve your students in the most impactful and beneficial ways. Your student’s teacher will communicate their testing schedule.

For more information about the Smarter Balanced Assessments and other state testing, visit https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing. Please call or email me at 360-503-1490 or at bhanrahan@asd103.org if you have questions or concerns about state testing.

  • Using the $5,000.00 that Island View students won at the Shell Fuelin’ Education Fun Run, we had two water bottle filling stations installed recently at school, one in the south hall and one in the north hall. These filtered water stations are good for our school community. Please encourage your students to bring a wide-mouth water bottle to stay hydrated!

  • For illness related absences, attendance and health room staff must continue to track symptoms, following COVID-19 health guidance. To report an absence, please call 360-503-1400 or email isvattend@asd103.org. Please include symptoms and their onset.

I will end on a rather personal note. My youngest son will graduate from Anacortes High School in roughly 30 school days. He has had an inspiring senior year because of the sustained efforts of our school and wider community. While I initially centered my feelings on his leaving, I slowly realized that is not the case at all — once you are part of our beautiful community, it will always be part of you, and you will always be part of it. That is the beauty of Anacortes Schools. Embrace that reality as your own students move on to new soarin’ heights.

In gratitude, Brian Hanrahan

News from the Island View Garden

It has been a long two years since families were out in the school garden. I am excited to jump on board and get the garden back to blooming, so our students and families can grow fresh veggies and fruits, and learn in the process.

I would like to introduce myself to you. I am Sammie B., and I am a volunteer parent here at the school garden. I have been helping teachers and students get the garden in shape for planting. Students are already coming out with their classes to plant vegetables that will be ready this spring or over the summer and fall. We welcome your participation in the garden anytime!

We want to thank the student and parent volunteers from Ms. Shainin's class and the Island View staff members who came out on April 16 to help plant trees and distribute soil around the garden. Maillard's Landing in Oak Harbor graciously donated seven fruit trees - thank you to Trevor and Nolan for their help with this. We look forward to seeing our Island View Eagles enjoy cherries, apples and pears this summer and fall!

Ace Hardware also kindly donated a box full of vegetable seeds, which students have been planting in their raised beds, and Sebo's donated 7 bags of compost. Thank you to our local businesses for your support!

I'm currently taking a Master Composter class, and have started a worm bin at the garden, thanks to a donation of worms from the middle school. Once the worm bin is established, we can teach students about vermiculture. I am also considering starting a Garden Club that could meet after school. If your child is interested, please email me at sammiebission917@gmail.com.

Over the summer, families are invited to help water the garden and harvest anything that's ready during the week you are watering. You can sign up for that here: Garden Water and Harvest Sign-Up.

Thank you for your help!

Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School is a program that promotes walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement tools, safety education, and incentives.

These initiatives improve safety during school commutes in the larger community and in the vicinity of schools; a secondary benefit is a natural increase to student physical activity levels.

As with so many things, this program has languished with COVID, but as school routines return to normal, we're looking for volunteers to help make safety a priority and encourage more kids to walk and bike to school (reducing traffic around town and Island View).

Past activities include a bike assessment and repair clinic and a helmet fitting/give away, plus incentives for walking and biking to school.

We're hoping to start these again next fall, and are looking for volunteers to help with these activities. Next month, we're planning a school-wide group walk and bike from Storvik Park, and hope to have a large turnout of kids and parents coming together with teachers and administrators for a fun, community-building event (stay tuned for details!).

Please reach out to the PTA President if you're interested in helping with this important program.

Teacher Wish Lists

You may have heard your child talk about their Class Charter this year. Similarly, our Island View staff members have a Staff Charter where they're focusing on feeling supported, valued, connected, and balanced. We know we can help with that!

There are several new lists on our Wishlist page, including some from specialists and the ISV Counselor, Mr. Vecchione! Check them out and if you are able, please consider giving back to our amazing teachers by clearing 1 or more items from any of their wish lists! #clearthelist

❤️ THANK YOU teachers for all you do!!

❤️ THANK YOU to everyone else for your help with clearing the lists!!
