Principal's Message
Dear Island View Families:
What a crazy weather month we’ve experienced! During our recent snow closures, I enjoyed walking home in the afternoons and watching young children sledding down the hills behind Island View, their giggly laughter filling the brisk air. I fondly remembered time with my own sons (now both in high school) on those very sledding hills. Savor these experiences with your children. Time moves too quickly.
I love February for at least two reasons. Soon the Island View hallways will be filled with red hearts and artwork that exude warmth and belonging. The decorations are simply another reminder of the school culture we embrace daily.
February is also the month that we once again invite families for conferences. Like last year, we have a limited conference schedule in the winter. While fall conference week allows teachers to meet with every parent, February conference week has only two days allotted for conferences (February 12 and 13). Consequently, teachers will schedule conferences with a limited number of selected families. In these cases, teachers will reach out to individual parents to schedule a conference.
If you are not contacted by your student’s teacher and you have a need to meet, please reach out to your student’s teacher. While conference slots are limited, teachers will do their best to accommodate requests, if possible.
I look forward to seeing our school filled with families in the coming week. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact me at 360-503-1490 or at bhanrahan@asd103.org.

100th Day Food Drive on NOW
Let's honor the 100th day of school and see if each grade can collect a 100 cans of food to help others in need. The non-perishable food items will go directly to food banks in Anacortes through A Simple Gesture. Students may drop donations in the big red bins inside the main entrance between now and February 7th.
This year's theme is "Take a Bite Out of Hunger". The winning grade level wins cookies. :) Also, note that Challenge students will donate to their respective grade levels instead of being separated out.

Movie Mayhem a WILD success
Class ACT performances were a smashing success! HUGE thanks to all parents for getting kids to/from rehearsal despite the wacky schedules, and to all the parent volunteers during rehearsals and performances, especially Chair Nicole Mortimer. Special thanks to ISV staff (Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Geibig, teachers, and Mr. H) for supporting the process - it was a memorable experience for our students.
SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS
Want to make school zones safer for everyone? The more kids who walk, bike and bus to school, the fewer the number of cars on the road. In addition to the health benefits of walking and biking, fewer cars means less pollution. And kids who travel in groups are safer. It's a win-win.
The city is looking for a PTA rep (or two) to help encourage and plan fun SRTS events. Please contact Treva King for more information. trevaking@yahoo.com.
Let's feed our teachers!
It's not too late to contribute to the Conference Night Taco Bar for Teachers! Let's make it a night to remember and give our wonderful teachers a delicious meal before evening conferences on Wednesday, 12 February. Sign up here!
COLOR RUN Meeting on 20 Feb
Everyone is invited to the first planning meeting on Feb 20 at 2:30pm. Contact president@islandviewpta.org for more information.
March is I Love To Read Month
Every March, Island View students and staff celebrate reading all month long! This year we have tons of new and fun ways to dive into a good book and share your experience with others. Look for information going home at the end of February and get ready to celebrate reading like never before!
It's time to think...YEARBOOK
Calling All Photographers!
Our yearbook is in production, and we need your school event photos! Do you have treasured images from field trips, classrooms, lunches, recess, or pre/after school events? We'd love to publish them.
Just email your images to yearbook@islandviewpta.org or drop off a disk or flash drive at the office. Please be sure to include your name and contact information with all submissions, along with the teacher and/or classroom for the students in your photos. Photos should be high resolution color JPGs.
We can't wait to see what you've got. Thank you!
Mark your calendars for RIF!
Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is a wonderful national program that gives free books to K-3 students twice a year. The students get to pick their very own books, smiles abound, and the love of reading is born!
April 28 is the big day and volunteers are needed to assist with set-up, short shifts during the day, and cleanup. Sign up here and support our youngest readers!
